There are more country songs than you can count about falling in love and getting married. The latest from Pistol Annies is the total opposite of that.
Filmed at the County Clerk’s office and DMV in Murfreesboro, the group’s latest video for “Got My Name Changed Back” turns getting divorced into a celebration.
The group is expected to perform at the CMA Awards in a couple weeks, and if they play this song and Blake Shelton is in the audience…things could get a little tense. Lambert, of course, separated from Shelton in 2015.
The video starts with the trio — Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley — strutting into a courtroom to see a judge so Lambert can finalize her divorce. Lambert goes on to sing, “I wanted something new / Then I wanted what I had / I got my name changed back.”
Once Lambert gets up from the stand an officer of the court uncorks a champagne bottle and it’s an all-out party inside the courtroom. Even the champagne bottle’s label says “Free Dom.”
The scene then changes to the group waiting in line at the DMV. (Been there, done that) Lambert now has to change her name back on all her government documents. Somehow, they turn this into a party, too.
“Now who I was ain’t who I’ll be,” Lambert sings.
Monroe is then seen getting a new driver’s license photo taken amid a confetti shower. We doubt the passports office will let that photo appear on all over her identification.
Lambert and her friends then stroll into aptly named New Freedom Bank. And, in this verse, is where the ladies really get their revenge. “I played to win, lookin’ back is funny /
I broke his heart and I took his money.” The group then withdraws stacks of cash that they drop in their designer handbags.
The New Freedom Bank employees then deliver flowers and a giant sheet cake the Angeleena Presley. The cake shows a bride surrounded by an army and a lone groom standing alone on the other side.
The video ends with the group wrapping up their dance party with the judge, the DMV employee, the folks in line at the DMV, and the champagne chugging officer of the court.
Pistol Annies are not nominated for any CMA Awards this year, but this could certainly become the storyline of the show if they choose to perform this showstopper of a song.
Miranda Lambert is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, hoping to repeat last year’s win.
