The crews who keep the lights on compete in the Lineman's Rodeo

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - - The Tennessee Lineman Rodeo is a competition of speed, skill, and finger strength.

The crews responsible for keeping the lights on, turned on the competition in the sweltering Tennessee heat, trying to top the rest.

"It lets me have fun with my craft, instead of just the day to day grind of going out and sweating and working hard," said Chase Patterson, a 2nd-year apprentice. "We kind of get to have fun, come out here and climb poles."

This is Chase's first rodeo. He's going toe-to-toe in the apprentice division. He was part of a strong showing for Middle Tennessee Electric. They were one of 30 teams from around the state, region, and even as far away as Colorado.

"It's great training, great for the new apprentices, great for the linemen, they don't climb as much as they used to, but this keeps them honing their skills, said event coordinator Keith Davenport. "Gives them a great opportunity to showcase their skills to their family and friends."
