Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that happened Thursday night after a man lying in the middle of I-40 West in Cocke County was struck by a bus.
Geoffrey K Cheruiyot was lying in the middle of the road when the bus, carrying 34 passengers, hit and killed him.
The driver of the bus then pulled over to the side of the road. None of the passengers on the bus were hurt.
Officials with MTSU confirmed that Cheruiyot just graduated MTSU in May with a bachelor’s degree in community and public health.
MTSU Athletics Director Chris Massarro tweeted that “Very difficult days for our department and our track program. Geoffrey accomplished a great deal in his life and at MT. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.”

MTSU is planning a memorial service for him Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Kennon Sports Hall of Fame
It is unclear why Cheruiyot was laying in the road at this time.
