911 CALLS: Driver injured in crash after Chattanooga bridge barrier collapse

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC) — A 911 call reveals terrifying moments for a driver injured in a crash following a barrier collapse on I-75 Monday.

Chattanooga Police say a driver merging onto I-24 Westbound collided with the concrete and was taken to the hospital.

In the call, the man tells dispatchers he has head and stomach injuries.

You can later hear another man in the background who rushed to the driver’s aid.

As of Wednesday morning, an Erlanger spokesperson says he’s listed in fair condition. Earlier this week, he was listed in critical.

Officials are not releasing his name, and family members we’ve spoken with say they do not want to talk about what happened right now.

TDOT’s chief engineer said Tuesday that they believe a truck carrying an oversized load hit the underside of the bridge. TDOT believes that led to the concrete barrier collapsing onto the highway below.

Governor Bill Lee was in Chattanooga Tuesday night. He stressed the importance of updating the state’s infrastructure.
