NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The 26-year-old man critically injured when he was hit by a rideshare vehicle while riding an electric scooter near downtown Nashville Thursday night has died from his injuries, according to officials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The man on the scooter, identified by police as Brady Gaulke, was transported to Vanderbilt University for treatment of injuries described by officers as “life-threatening.”

According to VUMC officials, Gaulke died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash around 12 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Metro police responded around 10:15 p.m. Thursday to the scene of the collision at Demonbreun Street and 14th Avenue South. The Metro Police Fatal Team was also called out to the scene, as they investigate life-threatening and fatal crashes.

According to police, friends said Gaulke was riding the scooter on the sidewalk, then turned left into the roadway and into the path of the rideshare SUV.

The preliminary contributing factor to the crash is improper turning on the part of Gaulke, officers said.

There was a bicycle lane present on Demonbreun Street and police said scooter riders are required to follow laws applicable to bicycles being operated on a roadway.

Police added that people are not permitted to ride scooters on sidewalks within a business district, which is defined as the territory contiguous to, and including, a highway when, within any 600 feet along the highway, there are buildings in use for business or industrial purposes, including but not limited to, hotels, banks, or office buildings, railroad stations and public buildings that occupy at least 300 feet of frontage on one side or 300 feet collectively on both sides of the highway.

The incident remains under investigation.
