A Nashville man was rescued after falling off a cliff during Saturday storms.

According to Wolfe County Search & Rescue crews, the man was hiking when storms broke out around 8 p.m. He told them he was seeking shelter from lightning when he fell down an embankment and went over a cliff on Auxier Ridge Trail.

Once on the scene, rescue teams from Wolfe County and Powell County got his approximate location verbally and then rigged a high angle rope operation to get team members down nearly 200-feet to reach him.

The man was not injured, so rescue workers put him in a harness and raised him back up the cliff line. The rescue was complicated by the many ledges and thick terrain they had to navigate.

Officials say the man was doing well and heading back home to Nashville Saturday night.
