Riverbend Maximum Security Institution was placed on lockdown late Wednesday morning while a suspicious package found by mailroom staff is investigated.
Tennessee Dept. of Corrections officials say the mailroom immediately notified supervisors about the package. Local first responders were called to the facility on Cockrill Bend Blvd just before 11 a.m.
At this time, the area around the administration building, where the mailroom is located, has been evacuated. Staff who came in contact with the package are being evaluated on site, and officials said no inmates were in contact with the unknown, suspicious item.
Officials also said, “out of an abundance of caution,” the entire facility was also placed on lockdown and movement about the compound is restricted.
