NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - 600 yards in a month will get people's attention. For Titans running back Derrick Henry, it got him four victories and the AFC's Offensive Player of the Month.
Henry exploded down the stretch for the Titans, especially the last four games when he went for 585 yards on 87 carries. That was good for 6.7 yards per carry and an average of 21 carries and 146 yards per game.
The strong finish put Henry at 1,059 yards for the season, that was good for 2nd in the AFC and 7th in the NFL.
With the way Henry struggled to start the season it is not something anyone saw coming.
"I would say that if he started off 2019 like he ended 2018, I think that would be great." said head coach Mike Vrable, "That would be unbelievable for everybody."
Henry is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is excited to build on the success he finally tapped into, "I will definitely use the momentum in the off-season to get better and focus on the things I need to get better at and get ready for when we come back in here. I am just going to focus on getting better this off-season train like I always have."
The good news for Henry is he should still have plenty of tread left on the tire after splitting carries with Demarco Murray for two seasons and Dion Lewis last season. A big year could result in a big payday.
