The Tennessee Volunteers stranglehold on the top ranking in college basketball continued Monday with the Vols holding the top spot in the AP poll for the fourth week in a row.
The Vols knocked off Missouri and Florida last week to run their win streak to 18 games and secure the top spot once again. They did lose a few first-place votes to Duke after the 2nd ranked Blue Devils beat now 4th ranked Virginia Saturday, but Tennessee still has 40 of a possible 64 and a firm hold on the top spot.
How long can this win streak continue though? The Vols have a showdown with Kentucky Wildcats looming Saturday and UK is also red hot riding a 10-game win streak.
Before that though, the Vols face Frank Martin’s South Carolina Gamecocks.
Games like that are typically referred to as “trap” games, but Barnes does not expect this Tennessee team to overlook the Gamecocks.
“I would be shocked because I think our guys have so much respect for South Carolina. They understand where they’re at right now and have a great respect for our league and know, I thought we went out and competed hard against Florida and I expect them to understand today’s preparation is really, really important tomorrow.”
Gonzaga is ranked third this week, Virginia fourth and Kentucky fifth. LSU is the only other ranked SEC team, the Tigers are 19th.
