Austin Peay is having a great season under second-year head coach Matt Figger.
The Govs are a game behind the two teams tied at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings – Belmont and Murray State.
When they met those two teams, Austin Peay put up a good fight. But for Figger, close doesn’t count for anything.
“It’s about winning and being close doesn’t count,” he said. “Only in horseshoes and hand grenades, and we want to be winners. We’re never going to be satisfied until we win one of those games. It’s one or two possessions in both games and unfortunately, we’ve not figured out how to be on the good side of those possessions. Hopefully, our kids are learning those type of values and lessons from playing in those big games.
The Govs have four games left to move up in the OVC standings and will have another shot at Murray State. But they also said they’re not looking past their next game on Thursday against Southeast Missouri.
