In Tennessee, the minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. That isn’t very much when you’re trying to pay your bills and support a family in a growing city like Nashville.
Eighteen states across the country raised their minimum wage in the last year, according to a report from the National Conference of State Legislatures. Eight states automatically adjust rates based on the cost of living, and 10 states upped wages through legislation or ballot initiatives.
States like New Jersey and Illinois recently enacted legislation to gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2024 and 2025 respectively.
Tennessee, like many states, does not have a specific wage requirement because employers are required to operate under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. That law mandates a $7.25/hour wage.
