Woman police say was killed, dismembered by husband laid to rest in Winchester

WINCHESTER, Tenn. (WKRN) - Friends and family gathered Friday afternoon to lay Lisa McCoy to rest in Winchester.

Investigators say her husband, James “Rick” McCoy shot her multiple times before dismembering her body

Christie Brown, Lisa's hairdresser and friend for more than a decade, told News 2 the couple had an on-again, off-again relationship for years.

She said Lisa was finally moving on from the relationship when she believes Rick snapped.

"Rick to the outside world, you wouldn't know the things he did to her," Brown said.

She knew the couple had an unhealthy relationship, but never thought it would go this far.

"I saw a lot of signs, but I didn't see this coming... I didn't see this coming, I really didn't."

Officers were called to the McCoy's home in Manchester on Duck River Road around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Investigators believe Lisa died from multiple gunshot wounds before her husband cut off both of her legs in an attempt to dispose of the body.

"What a monster, what a monster," Brown said.

She said just two weeks ago, Lisa came to her with concerns about McCoy's behavior, so she urged her friend to get help.

"I wanted her to get a restraining order. I told her about the Haven of Hope," she said.

She believes Lisa stuck around for her son.

"Everything she did was for her son," said Brown.

Now she wishes she would have done more to intervene.

"I wish now I would have just called the cops myself," Brown said.

She said she hopes Lisa's tragic story will encourage others in domestic abuse to find a way out.

"She was just so kind. She would have been the first person to come and help someone else, I just hate that she couldn't help herself. My only peace is knowing that she's with God and she is not suffering anymore... we are going to miss her here because she was such a good person," she cried.

Marcrom's Pharmacy in Manchester where Lisa worked closed early Friday in her honor.

Lisa is being buried beside her parents in Winchester. Her obituary asks that people paint their ring finger purple as a vow to end domestic violence.

McCoy is being held without bond. His preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 16.
