SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agents have confirmed a fatal officer-involved shooting in Smith County.
According to TBI, Smith County deputies responded to a home on Boyd Lane near Carthage to reports of a stabbing earlier Thursday morning. Officials said 38-year-old Gary Wayne Madewell allegedly attacked a woman who was subsequently hospitalized.
Investigators said deputies entered the home and saw Madewell in possession of a knife. For reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated, which resulted in at least one deputy shooting Madewell, who died at the scene.
Madewell has a lengthy criminal past that dates back to 1999 in Tennessee.
Just last month he was charged with disorderly conduct in Smith County. He also has recent public intoxication and drug arrests. In 2015 he served prison time; including a 6-year sentence for a felony drug charge.
A long-time friend of Madewell’s tells News 2 he was a nice guy that has battled demons for awhile. She is now praying for his family, wishing his life didn’t end this way.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
TBI says they are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
