SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – Students at Stewarts Creek Elementary already have a jump on the 2016-2017 school year, just before summer vacation.
Second, third and fourth grade students moved to their next classrooms Monday where they found their names already posted on their desks for next year.
Principal Ginger Tucker said teachers want extra time to get to know their students that way, the focus in the fall can be on the curriculum.
“It gives us an opportunity to go ahead and get that piece of the puzzle, getting to know our students, out of the way and jumping into those standards early,” explained Tucker, adding, “How many times does a teacher say, ‘If I just had more time, if I just had more time.’ We saw the month of May as kind of a gift of time if we decided to allocate and use it just a little differently.”
Fifth grade students have a more dramatic change ahead of them – middle school.
To prepare fifth graders for changing classrooms throughout the day, the students go to the second grade hallway to practice.
Testing begins at second grade, meaning all students involved in the early promotion will be tested next year.
