Standout high school baseball player shot in north Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A stand-out youth baseball player, who made headlines in 2012 when the Goodlettsville All-Stars went to the Little League World Series, was shot earlier this week in north Nashville.

According to his former coaches, 16-year-old Lorenzo Butler was shot twice at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following an argument.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said Butler admitted to firing a gun at some point during the alleged argument, so police have not ruled out that Butler's gunshot wounds were accidentally self-inflicted.

The gun has been sent to Metro's crime lab for testing and Metro Youth Services detectives have taken over the case.

Butler is now a junior at Hillwood High School, where he plays varsity baseball.

He underwent surgery this week and is still hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is stable.

Johnny Garrett, the president of Goodlettsville Baseball, told News 2 Butler's family is not able to afford his mounting medical bills.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for his care.

According to Garrett, Vanderbilt's head baseball coach, Tim Corbin, visited Butler in the hospital this week.
