Smith County Landfill catches fire, smoke seen for miles

SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) –  Smoke could be seen for miles after the Smith County Landfill caught fire Sunday afternoon.

According to the Smith County Emergency Management Director, the blaze started around 4 p.m. at the landfill located on 370 Kennedy Road in Carthage.PHOTOS: Smith County Landfill fire 

The fire covered an entire acre, and smoke could be seen as far away as Lebanon and Gallatin.

Officials used dirt and water to smother the blaze and get the situation under control.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire.

Up to 15 counties use the Smith County landfill.
