SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Spring Hill Police Department arrested a man who they say was smoking crack cocaine out of a beer can while driving down the street.

According to police, officers pulled over Jose Daniel Molina, 27, just before 3 a.m. for a broken tail light Thursday in front of Walmart on Main Street in Spring Hill.

During the traffic stop, the officer reportedly smelled a strong odor of alcohol and noticed a beer can.

“The officer asked the driver what he was doing with a beer can. The driver kind of said, ‘Oh,’ and took off,” Detective Michael Foster said.

The chase, captured on video, shows Molina driving through the Walmart parking lot and behind the building where he eventually stopped, got out of the car, jumped over a fence and into a pond.

Police told News 2 he admitted to swallowing two bags of crack cocaine to get rid of the evidence before jumping into the cold water.

“He said while he was driving in the car he decided to eat the evidence, which is never a good move,” Foster said.

A short time later police were able to talk Molina, who said he couldn’t swim, out of the pond. Police said he was in the water for about a minute.

“This probably is an unusual case for us, especially how it ended up. People do from time to time think it’s a good idea to eat drugs then they’re not thinking right,” Foster said.

They just think I’m getting rid of the evidence they won’t charge me but it does harm your body to do that.”

The Spring Hill man was taken to TriStar Centennial Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition early Thursday afternoon.

Police said he will be charged with felony evading, tampering with evidence, DUI, driving on a suspended license and driving with a broken taillight.

According to police, Molina was charged with simple possession and violation of probation in 2012.

Molina must have jumped out of his tennis shoes when he took off running because Thursday morning the neon orange shoes were spotted along the edge of the pond.
