ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man has been taken into custody Monday morning after Metro police said he barricaded himself inside a home in the Priest Lake neighborhood and set it on fire.

Firefighters and officers were called to a home in the 3700 block of Hamilton Church Road around 4:30 a.m.

Metro police reported officers were called to the residence after the homeowner reported a man forced himself inside the home by breaking in through the back door.

The homeowner and a second person hid until officers arrived to safely escort them outside.

The man was on the second floor of the home when officers arrived and refused to obey their commands, according to Metro police.

For more than an hour, officers reportedly gave repeated verbal commands for 28-year-old Roberto Viera-Aybar to surrender, but he refused.

Metro police reported he then began to vandalize the bedroom, breaking out a window and throwing furniture outside.

He lit items on fire and tossed those out the window yelling, “there’s a fire and I can’t breathe,” according to Metro police. Authorities said Viera-Aybar ultimately jumped out of the window and landed on the victim’s car.

Viera-Aybar was taken into custody without force and transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Officials said the bedroom was destroyed and is inhabitable following the fire.

Viera-Aybar was booked into the Metro jail and charged with aggravated burglary, assaulting a police officer and vandalism. His bond was set at $75,000.
