Police identify man murdered at East Nashville homeless camp

News

Metro police are investigating after a man was shot and killed in East Nashville early Friday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. along Oldham Street near First Street.

Metro police said 37-year-old Joey P. Bryant was shot and killed inside a tent at a homeless camp just off N. First St. Witnesses identified the suspect by his nickname, Chico.

Police learned that the suspect, identified by his real name as 40-year-old Dave L. Jackson, went to an acquaintance’s room at the Stadium Inn and left a pistol behind.

Jackson was later arrested at a residence on Shelby Avenue. Police believe he shot Bryant during an argument in the victim’s tent.

Jackson is charged with criminal homicide. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.

The victim’s identification has been delayed due to issues notifying his next of kin.
