MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — Oakland Middle School students and staff in Murfreesboro are filling up boxes with lots of food.

They’re part of the News 2 Food 2 Families school food drive that benefits Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and partnering food banks.

The school’s goal is to collect at least 3,500 food items.

“This drive is important because it goes to people who are hungry, not only just in Middle Tennessee, but in Rutherford County, like our neighbors. People in our own school are hungry and we don’t realize it , so that’s why we are giving this food to second harvest food bank to make sure those kids and those families have meals,” said 8th grader Taylor Kulaszewski.

The school’s music teacher has pledged to fill two boxes of food if his students fill another six in his classroom.

All schools participating are competing for cash prizes from Kroger and Cornerstone Financial.
