The City of Dallas is coping with a double tragedy after a police officer was killed while working a funeral for another officer.

The Dallas Police Department says Senior Corporal Earl “Jamie” Givens, a motorcycle police officer, was killed Saturday morning by a suspected drunk driver.

Police say Cpl. Givens was hit while he was blocking a highway ramp so the funeral procession for Senior Corporal Tyrone Andrews could go through.

Other officers immediately started rendering aid to Givens at the scene. He was then taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver who hit him was later arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Givens was a 32-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department.
