NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Voting for the American Human Association’s annual Hero Dog Awards is underway and one of the nominees is from right here in Nashville.
Duncan is a diabetic alert service dog for Ron Zolkower who has been a type one diabetic for more than 30 years.
Zolkower and Duncan have been together for almost three years now.
Duncan can sense any change in his blood sugar before Zolkower even knows what’s happening, as well as feel seizure episodes before they occur.
When Zolkower can’t move, Duncan even knows exactly where the juice is in the refrigerator to get his blood sugar back to normal.
Zolkower says Duncan truly is a lifesaver and there have been countless times when he wasn’t sure what would have happened if Duncan wasn’t there.
