New owners give Old Hickory Country Club a facelift

Nashville 2019

The Old Hickory Country Club has been a staple in the area since 1926, and some new owners have big plans for the 130-acre property, some of which are already in progress.

Steve Smith and Al Ross, who own several bars and restaurants in downtown Nashville, purchased the Old Hickory Country Club about nine months ago. They told News 2 it just needed a bit of a facelift.

“We loved this golf course, it’s one of the best golf courses in Nashville, and we love playing here,” Smith said. “We were afraid that the club might not make it if we didn’t step in and try to help them out.”

With the way the area is growing, they said they couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“We looked around the city and saw how the growth was starting to really come out in Old Hickory, and it is a fast growing place now,” Ross said.

They want the club to be a place other members and the public can enjoy.

“The downstairs is going to stay private to all the members through the new building into the existing building, which will be totally remodeled,” Smith explained. “What will be open to the public is all [of] the top floor in the new building through the old building.”

Smith describes the restaurant as “swanky casual.”

They said construction is moving at a pretty rapid pace.

“We’re going to have the downstairs open hopefully by the end of May for the private club end of it,” Smith said. “Then we plan on having the upstairs open between now and October of this year.”

There will also be a new pro-shop. The fitness center will be remodeled, too.

“We already renovated the whole pro-shop area and we should be finishing it up today,” Smith told News 2. “We’re going to gut this fitness center and totally rebuild it. We’re going to build an indoor racketball facility over here on the other side of the swimming pool.”

The new owners also purchased a church on the neighboring property that will become an event center.

“We’re going to have a chapel where you can get married — it’s going to make a great addition,” Ross said. “It sits on a hill and it’s got a panoramic view of the golf course.”

The course itself will also get a facelift.

“Golfers want a driving range that you can get on it, walk on it, hit balls and go out and play,” Ross said. “This is small, and we’re going to re-do the driving range. We’re going to build it up. We’re going to put some lights out there. We’re going to add places to it.”

Smith and Ross say their goal is to bring this outdated golf club back to life and turn it into a place where members and the public will want to spend their days and evenings.

They expect construction to be done in four phases. In the meantime, the club and course will remain open.
