MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – A woman who claims she was spit at, run off the road and called a terrorist in Murfreesboro says she believes she was targeted because of her head covering.

Sarah Alzubi told News 2 her normal commute home from work Thursday afternoon took a terrifying turn when a man in a white pickup truck reportedly started harassing her.

“He basically started spitting at my car. He was trying to spit directly in my vehicle,” Alzubi said.

She said when she tried to speed away, he followed.

“He was coming toward my vehicle; he didn’t look like he was slowing down. Like he was going to hit me at full force,” she explained.

Alzubi said the man followed her for several miles, swerving his car into her lane, before she reached a median on NW Broad Street, which is where she said the man came at her aggressively.

“I could see him trying to rip his seat belt off to try and get to me and he was saying stuff again, ‘stupid b,’ real graphic.”

Alzubi, who was wearing her hijab, or head scarf, told News 2 she felt targeted as a Muslim.

“He called me an ‘effing terrorist.’ He had slammed both of his fist down on my window as hard as he could and said, ‘I will effing kill you,’” she said.

The man ultimately sped away, leaving Alzubi in shock.

“You know to see that happen in the hometown you grew up in is just really hard,” she told News 2.

The Murfreesboro Police Department is investigating the case.

The driver in the reported incident is around 6 feet 2 inches tall and is heavy-set. He wears glasses and has a receding hair line and was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and blue jeans. He was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and the Tennessee-based American Muslim Advisory Council, have also called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the attack as a possible hate crime.
