MOUNT PLEASANT, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a man was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Mount Pleasant Tuesday night.

The TBI says a Mount Pleasant officer attempted to stop a driver suspected of driving under the influence when the man led the officer on a brief pursuit.

It ended at the intersection of Mount Joy Road and South Main Street around 9 p.m. Once stopped, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Bradley Nelson, exited his vehicle with a weapon, according to a press release.

Authorities said the situation escalated, and the Mount Pleasant officer fired his weapon, striking Nelson. He later died of his injuries at the Maury Regional Medical Center.

“It shocked me when I saw it on the news, you know. I didn’t know anything like that was going on around here. It’s quiet, this is a quiet area, hardly anything like that goes on like that,” said neighbor Jack Tolley.

No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing. The TBI said no further information is available at this time.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the department referred to the “serious situation” as “surely unfortunate.”

The post continued, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all parties involved. The Mount Pleasant Police Department’s staff is cooperating fully with the TBI, who is investigating the case. Please refer all questions and comments regarding this incident to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Thank you all for your continued support of the Mount Pleasant Police Department,” said the police department in a Facebook post on Wednesday.”
