Massive traffic jam on I-24 blocks some emergency vehicles trying to reach fatal crash scene

News

A fatal crash has closed I-24 Eastbound between Briley Pkwy. and Harding Place.

Metro Police confirm at least one person has died.

Hundreds of cars are backed up on the highway, and some are blocking emergency responders.

A number of cars tried to get around the traffic jam by driving on the shoulder. Now they’re at a standstill and blocking emergency vehicles from getting to the crash scene.

Anna Collier, who is a passenger in a car stalled in the same traffic tells News 2 some police cars are unable to get through because all lanes, including the shoulder, are jammed.

“We knew it was bad because there were so many emergency vehicles but now, the people, I don’t understand why they’re blocking the shoulders of the road. They’re infringing on help getting to the wreck,” said Collier.

Metro Police are investigating this deadly crash. As soon as they release new information we will update this story.

And that’s not the only bad crash Saturday night.

On I-65 south between Springfield and White House, a semi crashed leaving the truck mangled by the side of the highway.

Southbound lanes were closed most of the evening as crews worked to remove the truck.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating and has not released further information yet.

Eastbound lanes of I-24 are expected to remain closed until 10 p.m.

This story is developing and will be updated as new information becomes available.
