Metro Police said a man overdosed before breaking out of an ambulance on the way to the hospital, carjacking a woman and crashing the stolen vehicle.
The incident happened Saturday in south Nashville.
Police said 30-year-old Rico Lyons woke up from a drug-induced state while riding in the back of an ambulance.
Lyons then reportedly became agitated, broke out of the ambulance and ran from first responders.
Police said Lyons made it to the parking lot of a market along Nolensville Pike where a woman was loading groceries into her car.
Lyons reportedly pushed the woman to the ground and drove off in her car.
According to a police affidavit, the woman’s two children were in the car at the time but were able to escape before Lyons drove off.
Officers then tried to stop the suspect, who ran a red light before crashing into several other vehicles along I-24 East.
Police say they found Lyons passed out at the wheel.
He faces drug-related charges, evading police, carjacking, and DUI.
