Man killed in robbery, shooting near Jefferson Street club

Metro police detectives are currently investigating a fatal shooting on Jefferson Street early Sunday morning. 

According to police officials, the shooting occurred at Elks Lodge in the 2600 block of Jefferson Street. 

Detectives said 38-year-old Robert D. Shields was leaving the Elks Lodge carrying money related to a party when he was confronted by an armed robber. 

Police said Shields and the robber exchanged gunfire and Shields was hit. The robber fled. 

Shields was transported to Centennial Medical Center where he died. 

Detectives may have identified a suspect in the incident and will provide additional information when they can.
