Man charged with stealing car from Smyrna gas station with toddler inside

Smyrna police are investigating after an accused thief allegedly made off with a car that had a toddler inside Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, the owner of the car was at the Vallaro Mart on Weakley Lane around 4:20 p.m. when he went inside and left the car running with a 1-year-old child inside.

Police said the suspect got in the car and sped off with the child inside. The father chased after the car on foot until another driver at the store picked him up and they followed the stolen car while dialing 911, according to La Vergne police.

A Smyrna patrol officer was in the area and gave chase. Police said the chase continued down Weakley Drive and onto Couchville Pike, where it crashed behind a home in the 6000 block.

Officials said the suspect got out of the car and fled on foot while the officer safely secured the child.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies captured 33-year-old Corbett Newman after he ran through some woods and fields.

Smyrna police said they are still searching for a possible accomplice. They said Newman got out of the driver’s side of a four-door silver Acura at the Vallaro. A woman jumped over the console of the Acura and got into the driver’s seat.

She is described as a white woman with a petite build wearing a pink or peach colored shirt who has light brown or blonde hair.
