NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Images are popping up all over social media, including locally, showing teens taking part in a disturbing new trend to look like reality television personality Kylie Jenner.

Some teens want the 17-year-old reality star’s fuller lips so they are participating in what’s being called the “Kylie Jenner Challenge.”

“You stick a shot glass, or something on your lips and suck and it’s supposed to make your lips big,” explained Danielle Hulka, a junior at White House High, who has participated in the challenge.

She told News 2 she learned about the so-called challenge through Facebook.

“I just wanted to see if it would work, and it worked,” she said.

The effect though, according to Hulka, only lasted about an hour and left her looking strange.

“It’s like bruises on your lips,” she said. Hulka said she also posted on Facebook asking her friends and classmates to try it too.

She told News 2 they all had a similar reaction.

“Everyone has the bruise around their mouth too, like a ring around their mouth,” she said.

Hulka said she used a glass bottle to get the effect, while some people use a shot glass. There is even a product on the market specifically geared to make your lips bigger through suction.

According to Emergency Room Dr. Cori McKean with TriStar Summit Medical Center, all three techniques do the same thing.

The 17-year-old said the effects only lasted an hour and left bruising around her mouth.

She said they cause damage to the tissue within the lips, which causes swelling and in turn, makes a person’s lips look larger.

She said instead of making lips look better, it could make them look worse by leaving permanent scarring and lumps due to deep hematomas that can sometimes calcify and harden.

Dr. McKean said the permanent disfiguration would only be fixed with surgery.

“I’m not going to do it again,” said Hulka.

Dr. McKean said this method isn’t safer than plastic surgery because you can have permanent disfiguration with both.
