NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The annual “T-Shaw Strong” Golf Invitational will be held Monday at the Nashville Golf and Athletic Club.
The event is in honor of Tennessee Titan for life, Tim Shaw, who lives with ALS.
This year, the event has partnered with Team Gleason, which is a foundation that provides communications devices for people living with ALS.
“There are a lot of people who have ALS that are just normal people like you and I. It’s very expensive. What Team Gleason does is provide an opportunity for people have access to those resources and the technology,” Tournament Director Brian Layton told News 2.
ALS is a disease that slowly robs those impacted of every day functions.
Shaw was diagnosed five years ago.
“We started the tournament three years ago and Tim has a love for golf. When he and I were talking about doing something to raise some money and awareness for ALS, obviously it was natural for us to start a golf tournament,” added Layton.
The Tennessee Titans are a title sponsor of the event and several players are expected to attend.
“When we first started the event, obviously with Tim being a former Titan and captain, we went directly to the Titans and asked them if they wanted to be involved, and they fully embraced it. So they are our title sponsor, they have been every year. They are a great support financially but also just getting people there,” said Layton.
Layton said Shaw is doing great.
“Mentally he’s getting better and better, I feel like every day. Physically, ALS takes over your body. He’s not able to do the things we take for granted. Walking, feeding himself. But he’s doing well, he has a good attitude and is doing good,” said Layton.
The event includes an after party at Ravenwoods Mansion. The $50 ticket includes dinner, music and a silent auction.
