NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – With Summer approaching, many people may be planning long family getaways.

While families are away, its a good time for burglars to strike victims who aren’t even home.

What can you do to protect your home while you’re away? We all know to lock our doors and windows, but you can also rely on some area police to keep your home secure while you’re away.

“Keeping a list of your valuables, putting them in a safe place,” Lt. Brian Bush with the Knoxville Police Department told our sister station, WATE.

It’s also a good idea to set timers on your lights and alert your alarm company and set it when you leave.

You could also contact your local police department. Many agencies will offer to do a security check on your home while you’re out of town.

Law enforcement also encourages people to not share their vacation photos on social media until after they’ve returned from their trip.
