NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An investigation is underway after a woman — described by police as an “innocent bystander” — was shot and killed overnight in East Nashville.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said the shooting happened just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, in the 600 block of South 7th Street.

According to authorities, 53-year-old Letha R. Hayes was hit by gunfire after individuals inside an SUV started shooting at two men nearby. Hayes died at the scene.

Later Saturday morning, officials said a man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Police reportedly believe that man was one of the intended targets in the shooting, but he was uncooperative with law enforcement.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit are working to identify the person(s) responsible for the gunfire along South 7th Street. No other details have been released about the incident.
