NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Metro police are investigating a self-defense claim following a deadly Sunday night shooting that occurred at a gas station in the Bordeaux area.

The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. at a gas station in 3900 block of Clarksville Pike on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Authorities reported that 42-year-old Ricky Starks Jr. was shot and killed following a reported altercation that occurred at the store.

According to Metro police, Starks was outside of the Citgo gas station when the incident occurred.

Ricky Johnson Jr. — the man who allegedly shot Starks — told officers that he was exiting the Citgo when Starks approached him, pointed a gun at his head, pistol whipped him and demanded money.

Johnson, 34, told officers that Starks followed him as he ran inside the store. That’s when Johnson fired his gun and shot Starks multiple times. Authorities reported that video surveillance supports Johnson’s account of events.

Starks was taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center where he later the died, according to Metro police.

Officials said the district attorney’s office will continue to investigate the self-defense claim.
