NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A woman is being charged in connection with her friend’s death following a Saturday afternoon shooting at an apartment complex in the Bordeaux area.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said a 911 call came in from 28-year-old Gerrika Abernathy — also known as Gerrika Simmons — shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.

When officers arrived at Abernathy’s apartment in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Pike, they said they found her friend — identified as 34-year-old Marques Douglas — with a gunshot wound to his head.

According to officials, Douglas was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

At this point, the investigation shows Douglas had been staying at Abernathy’s apartment off and on, but Abernathy reportedly told him to come pick up his belongings, so he went over to her apartment on Saturday to do so.

Police said Abernathy claimed Douglas punched her in the head during a fight before going into a bedroom and closing the door.

“Detectives determined that when Abernathy fired the single shot through the bedroom door from the top of the stairs, Douglas was not an immediate threat to her and that she had the opportunity to walk down the stairs and leave,” Metro Police said in a statement Saturday night. “They further did not see a visible injury from the alleged punch Abernathy reported.”

According to authorities, Abernathy said during her interview that she was trying to scare Douglas, but she didn’t mean to shoot him.

Officials reported that detectives are charging Abernathy with criminal homicide.
