ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WKRN) — An investigation is underway after a 27-year-old man was killed and at least three other people were injured in a crash involving a stolen vehicle in Antioch Wednesday night.

The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, near the intersection of Anderson Road and Old Anderson Road in the Priest Lake neighborhood.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling northbound on Anderson Road at a high rate of speed when a Hermitage Precinct officer attempted to stop the vehicle, according to a release.

The Jeep fled from the officer, and a short time later, the officer came upon the crash.

Metro police reported five people were inside the vehicle when it crashed into a steel pole and guardrail before a man was thrown from the SUV.

The passenger — identified by officials as 27-year-old Thaddeus D. Wilkes — was pronounced dead at the scene. Efforts are underway to notify his family.

The driver ran from the vehicle after officers arrived and three others, ages 25, 22 and 21, were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor and serious injuries, according to authorities.

After the crash, officers discovered a handgun inside the Jeep along with tools frequently used to steal vehicles, according to Metro police.

Prior to the crash, police said neighbors had reported street racing and the SUV was seen speeding in the area.

Efforts are underway to identify the driver of the Jeep who ran from the crash.
