MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — One person is dead and another is in the hospital following a shooting on the Middle Tennessee State University campus.
It happened outside the Murphy Center off Middle Tennessee Boulevard at 8:51 p.m. Wednesday.
The shooting reportedly happened as people were leaving the Riverdale High School graduation at the Murphy Center.
Once on the scene, authorities found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds near the tennis courts next to the facility.
One victim, identified as Sunny Gant by family, has since been pronounced dead while another was taken to the hospital and is said to be in “critical but stable condition.”
Authorities said there is no suspect in custody at this time but a “person of interest” has been identified. Murfreesboro police reported officers are “working to locate him.”
A spokesperson for Rutherford County Schools said Riverdale High School will be closed Thursday “as a precaution.” The school system has no comment on the current investigation.
District spokesperson James Evans said Riverdale is one of their larger high schools and there were about 450 students graduating Thursday. He added there are also typically several hundred parents and other people attending these graduation ceremonies.
The district expects Riverdale to re-open Friday but they’ll let parents know a final decision at some point Thursday. Parents will be updated as the school learns more. Once the school reopens, they will have counselors available for students.
The graduation ceremony for Blackman High School is scheduled to happen Thursday at the Murphy Center. Holloway High School’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for Friday but the location is listed online as “to-be-determined.”
The Murfreesboro Police Department is working with Middle Tennessee State University Police, the Rutherford County Sheriff Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol in the investigation.
