NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Metro police said no charges will be filed against the man who shot and killed another man in downtown Nashville Sunday morning.

Officers said 26-year-old Deadrick Esaw claims he shot 37-year-old Ceron Coleman in self-defense.

Police said that Coleman was with family and friends when they left the Brugada Bar on Commerce Street around 3 a.m. They said Coleman’s brother and the brother’s girlfriend were approached by a friend of Esaw, none of them knew each other. A fight ensued shortly after.

According to a release, Esaw tried to break up the fight but was punched in the face by Coleman. As Esaw was on the ground, he said Coleman stood over him attempting to assault him again when he drew his pistol and shot Coleman in the torso.

Coleman was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he died.

Investigators said Esaw stayed at the scene briefly but left before police arrived. He drove to a fast food restaurant on Murfreesboro Pike and called police.

Police said Esaw had visible marks on his face consistent with being punched. His story was consistent with the account given by an independent witness.
