Cheatham County Deputy Chris Gilmore told News 2 the incident began in Nashville, where the suspect vehicle hit an officer’s vehicle.
The suspect vehicle then drove away on Highway 12. Cheatham County authorities later spotted the vehicle in a church parking lot and took up the pursuit until the Montgomery County line.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies were able to take over the pursuit at the county line, where they were alerted that the suspect — 46-year-old Jeffrey Alan Smith — was wanted in connection with kidnapping and aggravated assault charges. Deputies were also told Smith may be armed and dangerous with two juveniles in the car.
Authorities say the car went over 90 miles per hour through Clarksville city limits. Smith eventually crashed in the downtown area and was taken into custody.
The two children have been returned to their mother.
Smith was taken to the hospital and will face the following charges after being discharged:
- Felony evading
- Resisting arrest
- Reckless endangerment (x2)
Smith will also face an aggravated assault charge out of Nashville.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
