Inmate dies while in Metro police custody

An inmate died during the booking process at the Metro jail over the weekend.  

Metro police said Scott Haines died on Saturday at the Hill Detention Center on Second Avenue North in downtown Nashville.  

News 2 has learned that Haines’ death happened during the booking process.

Prior to his death, Metro police said officers responded to Earhart Road in Hermitage for a medical call. Marijuana was reportedly found at the site, and police said an ambulance was refused.  

Haines was subsequently arrested for drug possession and resisting arrest.  

Metro police said his autopsy showed no physical injury. Toxicology reports are pending.  

The family is questioning the sequence of events.
