An illegal cockfighting ring was discovered on a farm in Bedford County over the weekend.
Authorities told News 2 nearly 100 people were gathered at the farm located on Railroad Avenue near Shelbyville.
According to Bedford Animal Control Director Jack Cooper, when law enforcement arrived many people ran toward nearby wooded areas.
Nearly a dozen was cited for their alleged involvement in the cockfight.
Police were initially called to the farm after receiving calls complaining about a wild and loud crowd.
Cooper said nearly 600 birds were found on the property, but most of them were not involved in the fighting.
Several dead birds were found in garbage cans, according to Cooper.
The owner of the farm was not there at the time the cockfighting ring was busted up. Cooper said he is cooperating with authorities.
The investigation is ongoing.
