MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Three schools have “resumed normal operations” after being put on lockdown and lockout due to an alleged gun sighting in Montgomery County, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said, Tuesday morning, a student reported to the school administration they saw a male student dressed in black with a gun at Rossview Elementary. That school was on lockdown.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the school to assist in the investigation doing a search of the school and surrounding campus.

Meanwhile, out of precaution Rossview High and Middle schools were put on a lockout.

In updates throughout the morning, the sheriff’s office said no threats were found and they were not able to corroborate the student’s initial report.

A lockout is used when there’s a possible threat outside of the school, while a lockdown is used if there’s a possible threat inside a school.

The following message was sent to parents by the school district around 11:30 a.m.:

Rossview families,

We appreciate law enforcement’s rapid response at Rossview Elementary today. We take every report and rumor seriously. An elementary student reported that they saw a person in all black with a gun at school. Law enforcement has concluded their thorough search and investigation, searching all rooms multiple times and reviewing camera footage, and no threat has been identified. The lockdown and lockouts have been lifted. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be additional law enforcement on campus for the remainder of the day. Additionally, CMCSS is sending additional counselors, social workers, and support staff to the school for students and employees.

We understand how terrifying these situations are for families and that some may choose to pick up their child from school. Rossview Elementary families may check students out at the front of the school. Please have your ID ready. We ask for your patience as there could be delays, but we have additional staff ready to assist with check outs.

We want to reiterate our appreciation for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Clarksville Police Department for their rapid response and bravery to enter the building with no hesitation to keep our students and employees safe.

Even though police never found the threat, many parents raced to Rossview Elementary to pick up their children Tuesday. They told News 2 the message they received informing them of the lockdown was their “worst nightmare.”

“Not again. That’s the first thing I thought about,” Carlos Myers, whose granddaughter attends Rossview Elementary, said. “Nashville, all the other shootings that have been happening. We were just sitting there thinking not again.”

Some parents waited hours for their children while they waited for updates from police and the district.

“They’re telling us that it’s clear, they’re doing a second sweep, pick them up here, pick them up there, no one knows anything,” said parent Jacquelin Perez. “I just want to get my kid out of the school.”
