CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man was arrested after a camera was found inside the dressing room of an American Eagle Outfitters store in Clarksville.
According to police, Colton Wilson was booked into jail on charges of unlawful photography in violation of privacy, false reports, and tampering with evidence.
The 24-year-old, who was an employee at the store, is accused of placing a camera inside the dressing room between June 19 and June 21.
“He somehow placed a small camera or camera lens and some sort in a hook fixture of a fitting room,” said Joe Bell, Governors Square Mall Director of Corporate Communications.
Shoppers were very concerned to learn the news.
“It really kind of breaks my heart. These innocent women and men even, they go into a changing room and think that is it safe, and they have no idea that the camera is there, of course. You wouldn’t know, you don’t expect that. It makes you question humanity,” said Andrea Jolin.
Mall management told News 2 they do everything they can to protect shoppers and called this incident very concerning.
“It is certainly disturbing. We expect that people come into our shopping complex and that they will have a comfortable and safe and enjoyable experience. But you can never account for all the hundreds or thousands of individuals that work for those business owners. Those businesses. They try to do their best to screen their employees but you can never account for human behavior sometimes,” explained Bell.
Clarksville police say American Eagle Outfitters has been fully cooperating with the investigation.
The retailer released a statement Thursday afternoon saying, “The privacy and security of our customers and associates are of utmost importance to American Eagle Outfitters. The employee has been terminated, and we have been cooperating with authorities as they conduct their investigation. Since the investigation is still active, we ask that you direct additional inquiries to law enforcement.”
Detectives are currently sifting through the images and would like anyone who believes they may be a victim to call the Clarksville Police Department at 931-648-0656.
