WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — One man is in critical condition after a crash occurred early Sunday morning in Williamson County, police said.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Smartway Map, the crash was reported just after 4 a.m. on Sunday, March 19 on Interstate 65 South near mile marker 61.

The Franklin Police Department said a man’s vehicle was stopped in a southbound travel lane on I-65 when it was rear-ended by another motorist.

The driver who was hit was found severely injured outside of his vehicle, authorities reported.

“It is unclear whether he was ejected from the vehicle when it was struck, or if he was on foot, outside of it, at the time of the crash,” police stated. “There are early indications that the stopped vehicle may not have had its lights on at the time of the crash.”

Officials said they have yet to determine why the man’s vehicle was stopped in an interstate travel lane in the first place.

Meanwhile, the other driver was reportedly treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. However, no charges have been filed at this time, police said.

The southbound lanes of I-65 remained closed early Sunday morning as officers investigated the scene, but they have since reopened.

No other information was immediately released.
