Inside the feeding operation at the Nashville Zoo

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - Lots of planning and preparation goes into feeding the animals at the Nashville Zoo every day.

The Nashville Zoo goes through an average of 78,000 pounds of produce and 20,000 pounds of meat and fish every year.

Animals also eat about 200 tons of hay each year.

Along with the sheer amount of food, feeding the animals takes planning and preparation.

"They are getting weight out portions every day", said Nashville Zoo backstage pass tour guide Jessica Knox.

"They are actually getting restaurant-quality food. We get the produce from Creation Gardens; they supply a lot of restaurants with food in the south. These animals are eating pretty good."

Food portions are prepared one day in advance.

In all, it takes eight to ten hours to prepare the food each day.
