NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Iconic country artist Charlie Daniels (October 28, 1936 – July 6, 2020) died Monday of a stroke. He was best known for his No. 1 hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” in 1979 but had been active as a singer and musician since the 1950s. A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, he made his home in Mount Juliet, Tennessee.
