ORLANDO, Fla. (WKRN) – Former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson was injured in a drive-by shooting in Orlando early Sunday morning.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting that happened around 4 a.m. at an Orlando intersection.

According to police reports, officers arrived to find the driver of a Jeep dead inside the vehicle. He was identified as 28-year-old Dreekius Johnson.

Both passengers, former Titan Chris Johnson who was in the passenger’s seat and a man identified as Reggie Johnson who was in the backseat, were found nearby on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds.

Chris Johnson, 29, was shot in his shoulder. He was released from the hospital later Sunday evening.

The other passenger, Reggie Johnson, also 29, was shot in the shoulder, arm and leg. He was last listed in stable condition.

None of the victims are related.

Chris Johnson posted a photo montage on Instagram of himself and who appears to be Dreekius Johnson, writing, “Man when we was taking these pics that night didn’t know it will be the last one.”

News 2 spoke with Titans legend Eddie George Sunday who sends his condolences to the families of those involved in the drive-by shooting.

He said he was surprised to hear that Johnson was involved in such a situation.

“I mean he went out and did his thing but never once was he involved in anything bad or you heard his name synonymous with violence,” George said of Johnson’s time spent in Nashville.

Earlier this year, Johnson was arrested on misdemeanor gun charges in Orlando and was released by the New York Jets last month.

The timing is unfortunate for the Orlando native.

“I don’t know all the details about his life, his lifestyle or where he lives now, but he is a man that has accomplished a lot in the NFL, has a great deal of brand equity and hopefully this can be a wake-up call to say that part of my life is now over,” George explained.

It will still be a long road to recovery for the man that makes his living as a professional athlete.

“Hopefully he can recover from this and some team out there will allow him to play professionally,” George said.

According to the Associated Press, the Jets released a statement on the incident Sunday. It said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and everyone impacted by this tragic event.”

On Monday, Florida authorities said they believe the Jeep was the intended target but can’t say if the occupants were specifically targeted.

The shooting remains under investigation.
