Drowning victim recovered from Percy Priest Lake in Smyrna

News

A Smyrna woman drowned while swimming at the Jefferson Springs Recreation area Sunday night.

Rania Malak Saleb Gaber, 23, apparently got into trouble in the water after her husband left the water to cook dinner.

According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s office, the couple was swimming in Percy Priest Lake around 8:15 p.m. Gaber’s husband, Milad Beshara, told investigators he got out to cook. When he didn’t hear her a few minutes later, he started searching for her. Then he went to find help.

Rescue crews were called to the Jefferson Springs Recreation Area around 9:15 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, EMS, the TWRA and THP rushed to the site and did a ground and water search.

A THP helicopter pilot spotted the woman at 10:30 p.m. about 150 yards south of the Jefferson Pike Bridge.
