NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – If you have unused prescription medication in your cabinet, you can get rid of it easily this month.
The Drug Enforcement Administration is holding National Prescription Drug Take Back Day nationwide, and there are several places in our area where you can drop off your unwanted drugs.
You can drop-off your prescriptions any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. There are many locations across Middle Tennessee where you can go.
In Nashville, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation headquarters will be accepting the prescriptions. The Brentwood Police Department, Franklin Police Department, and La Vergne Police Department are also part of the initiative and will be taking back prescription drugs.
A full list of drop-off locations can be found below.
In 2016, the DEA collected more than 445 tons of prescription medicine on it’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Agencies in Tennessee collected and disposed of nearly 22,000 pounds of medicine.
The majority of prescription drug abusers report in surveys that they get their drugs from friends and family. From 2014 to 2015, opioid painkiller overdose deaths have increased by more than 13 percent in Tennessee.
The DEA says cleaning out old prescription drugs from medicine cabinets, kitchen drawers, and bedside tables reduces accidents, thefts, and the misuse and abuse of these medicines. The agency also says eight out of 10 new heroin users start abusing prescription painkillers before moving to heroin when they can no longer obtain or afford those painkillers.News 2 has taken in-depth look at the opioid crisis in Middle Tennessee. We shared the stories of both addicts and their families, of both hope and despair, as well as what law enforcement faces on the frontlines. For all of those stories, click here.
