Woman charged with stealing Metro police cruiser

A woman who was in the back of a police cruiser climbed through the divider separating the front and back seats, stole the cruiser and led officers on a chase, according to Metro police. 

Jennifer Stewart, 31, is charged with theft, evading arrest, vandalism and burglary of a motor vehicle.

A Metro police sergeant responded to a call Thursday evening at National Car Wash on Harding Place and reportedly finding Stewart in a physical altercation with a person from whom she is suspected of stealing. According to her arrest affidavit, Stewart broke into a car at that business.

Stewart was put in the back of the police cruiser, “in order to separate her from the victim.” While the officer was investigating. That’s where police say she crawled through the divider from the backseat and stole the cruiser.

Metro police worked with the Emergency Communications Center to get updates on Stewart’s location. Spike strips were deployed by officers to end the pursuit. 

Stewart is being held at the Davidson County Jail in lieu of a $37,000 bond. 

The Midtown Hills Precinct Commander is reviewing the circumstances of the theft of the patrol car.
